FAQ: What is the difference between citation and referencing?

The acts of citation and referencing are very different and distinct. Citation is the act of quoting the source of your information within the text of your literature, while referencing is listing the sources of your information chronologically at the end of your text, in a particular referencing format.

Citations and references are written in the format prescribed by your school or supervisor. as a researcher, you cannot mix referencing formats in one document. Therefore, before writing any references or citations in your document, it would be best to confirm the required citation and referencing format.

After you have confirmed the format, you can list your references in the required format at the end of your text as full references including the author(s) of the text using their first names followed by initials of other names, year of publication, title of the book/journal/text, particular pages where referral texts are found, and publishing house/company. Citations are short forms of the reference placed within the text, and they only indicate the author(s) and year of publication.
